Random Thoughts on the Idol Finale

American Idol

This is not the official American Idol recap for JoeOnTheTube, you can find it below.  But, I couldn’t keep myself from commenting on the biggest TV event of the season.  First things first, I’m glad Kris Allen won.  Of all the finalists, he’s the one I’d be most likely to buy an album from.  As the photo below shows, he was completely shocked to win.  I think Adam was the most entertaining of the contestants, but he’s a little over the top for me.  He’s entertaining, but I don’t love his music.  kris allen

In my opinion, last night proved that America is not ready for a “glam-rock” Idol.  They chose “fam-rock” instead.  I knew when Adam came out dressed for his Kiss performance that there was no way he could have won.  At least they did manage to pair him a group who wears more makeup and performs with more theatrics than him.  Despite his platform boots and crazy shoulder pads, he still seemed rather tame next to Gene Simmons.

Bringing back the final 13 contestants made me wonder if anyone other than the final four ever had a chance of winning this competition.  Some of them I had completely forgotten.  Lil Rounds was unrecognizable.  Matt Giraud was as goofy as ever.  And, Meagan Joy is a train wreck.  Watching her perform is painful and frightening, but I just can’t look away.  Her voice makes collaborative songs almost impossible.  I suspect she’s a nightmare for the folks in charge of producing the upcoming tour.

kara-dioguardiThe return of Norman Gentle and Tatiana Del Toro were expected, but entertaining.  I think that Norman would have been a better contestant for America’s Got Talent, so that he could have won his own Vegas show.  Tatiana was as annoying as ever, and she is a terrible actress.  I don’t think there was any acting involved when Bikini Girl’s song was interrupted by Kara.  She clearly seemed shocked.  Not quite as shocked as I was when Kara briefly showed her own bikini.  She could have used some spray tan.

All in all, I thought that last night’s show was very entertaining.  I still wish they would skew the guest performances a little younger (Queen, KISS, Lionel Richie), but it kept my attention enough to watch the entire show.  So I’ve officially wasted more countless hours watching Idol twice a week for months.  Every season I swear that I’m not going to get wrapped up in it, but I always do.  Damn you, Ryan Seacrest.

You thought Kara needed spray tan was all? How about some meat on her bones?

congrats to Kris, he stuck it out, got the votes he needed when he needed them and ended up winning the whole thing; he’s like a politician, only more sincere

You thought Kris Allen deserved to win because you can see yourself buying his album? You would have been able to buy his album even is he was runner up. :/

The contestant with the most talent and strongest overall body of work deserved to win…no? :3 The one who killed it every week despite the genre, despite the tempo. The one who was fearless every week, single-handedly shaking the show up so much so that even Idol haters, Idol mockers, those who don’t watch the show, musical legends, celebrities….took notice and tuned in – and praised him. The one who could sing ANYTHING (fuck. just compare Brigadoon to the Queen/KISS duets). The Idol who made the show what it was this year. Made the show different and a talking point all on his OWN – despite the judges’ cheerleading which he didn’t need yet nethertheless got.

Sigh. It would have been so refreshing for America to broaden their mind and taste a bit. Celebrate someone a little different and a rare talent instead of celebrating easy listening mediocrity for boy next door’s and underdog sake.

Kris is such a lovely guy but thumbs way down Middle America – and Arkansas & Gokey’s voters. If you dare, you lose.

I’ve gotta say this comes across as sour grapes. Adam lost. Did the fact that he’s probably gay and a little flamboyant cost him some votes? Probably, but I think America voted for who they wanted to win. American Idol has rarely been a singing contest, but more of a popularity contest.

Ultimately Adam Lambert’s loss was based on the fact that he didn’t have the fan base that Kris Allen had. More viewers felt that Kris was more deserving. Period. In fact, I would venture to guess that it was significantly more viewers based on the fact that I think Adam’s fans were more likely to vote multiple times, yet he still lost. Saying that Adam lost because he is gay is a copout. He would not be the performer that he is if not for the life experiences that led up to this moment. So, in my opinion, he would probably not have made the Idol finale if he weren’t gay. Ultimately, I think Adam’s downfall was the same as Blake Lewis’s during his beatbox days: it’s entertaining, but it’s not mainstream enough to win this particular show. Thanks for your comments.
