SYTYCD – Top Ten

Last nights episode of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) was an excellent kick off to the top ten dancers. With only 5 girls and 5 guys remaining the shows format has changed. The changes are:

  1. The dancers draw new partners every week
  2. The judges no longer have the final say in who goes home, it is all decided on votes now
  3. You now call in to vote for individual dancers not couples
  4. Everyone dances a solo

The remaining 10 dancers are:

  • Randi
  • Melissasytycd
  • Jeanette
  • Jeanine
  • Kayla
  • Evan
  • Kupono
  • Brandon
  • Ade
  • Jason

Last nights guest judge was Debbie Allen.

The night started out with a group number by all of the girls. It was a Bollywood number by Nakul Dev Mahajah. It was a fun dance, but I am getting a little tired of Bollywood. It is fast paced, but all the routines look similar to me.

Nigel – Absolutely Incredible

Mary – Really fun

Debbie – Amazing cultural fusion

Kayla & Evan were the first couple to get partnered up. It was funny because Kayla is the tallest girl & Evan is the shortest guy. Kayla ended up dancing barefoot & Evan danced in heels (manly heels, of course). They were given the Venice Waltz by Tony Meredith & Melanie Lapatin.

It was okay. You didn’t really notice the height difference.  I just am not a slow ballroom fan. Give me the jive or salsa & I am happy, but a waltz or a tango and I get bored really quickly.

Nigel – Didn’t see the difference in this and just a fast waltz

Mary – lacked power and the turns were painful

Debbie – enjoyed it

Brandon danced the first solo of the night. He is a contemporary dancer. It was a really good solo.

Jeanette & Ade were the next to dance as a couple. They drew hip hop with Nap & Tabs. I really liked it (Of course! I love hip hop). I loved the song and the routine. Ade hypnotized Jeanette with his  pick and gave her funk.

Nigel – It was great

Mary – It was funky

Debbie – So amazing

Next Randi danced her solo. She is a contemporary dancer. She dances very well. I think she is just a pretty dancer.

Kupono was next to dance his solo. I do not like Kupono. He is was too feminine for me. They also pointed out that he made is own costume, which was a ripped up mesh tank top and capri pants. Awesome.

Jeanine & Jason were the next couple to dance. They danced a contemporary routine by Travis Wall who was a contestent of season 2 of SYTYCD. It was AWESOME!!!! It was the best routine of the night. It told the story of two childhood friends who were falling in love. The judges gave it a standing ovation.

Nigel – Beautiful

Mary – You two are STARS!!!

Debbie – Bravo

There were three solo dances following Jeanine & Jason. First to go was Melissa. Melissa is a ballerina. It was beautiful. She is an amazing dancer.

Evan followed Melissa. He is a broadway dancer. His routine was great. He is amazing at broadway, but not so great at everything else.

Kayla is a contemporary dancer. She is amazing. She is so beautiful and has great lines.

Randi & Kupono were paired up and danced the Paso Doble b Lapatin y Tony Meredith & Melanie. My notes say BOO! I thought it was boring. Kupono is not strong enough. The lifts were horrible.

Nigel – Dancing was not as good as the choreoghraphy

Mary – Didn’t rize to the challenge

Debbie – Needed more time to practice.

Three more solos followed. First was Ade dancing contemporary. He did a layout! He is really good. He is my favorite guy right now.

Jeanine – Also contemporary. She is really good too. Everyone is talented this season. It is going to be a tough call.

Jason – Contemporary. His routine was entertaining. He is cute too so that should help him stay in the competition.

The last couple to dance was Melissa & Brandon. They danced a broadway routine by Tyce Diorio. I love Melissa. They danced a piece from Hair. It was really cute.

Nigel – Great

Mary – Unbelievable

Debbie – Seamless

Jeanette was the last to dance her solo. She is a salsa dancer. I love salsa, but it is hard for a ballroom dancer to dance their solo. I thought she did a good job though.

I hope think that Kupono will be leaving. I have no clue as far as the girls goes. Maybe Randi? I guess we will find out tonight.

I don’t like Kupono either. He gives me the creeps. I do like Randi (until last night she was in my top three) and am afraid that Kupono is going to get her voted off. All the girls are really good, and I loved their Bollywood routine. I have to say that Jeanine may be my favorite after last night. I haven’t decided on a guy.
