Only one episode left, and I don’t know about you but I’m pretty pissed I have to wait 2 weeks for it.
So Bill’s off to see the queen. I’m going to get this out of the way right now. I was pretty excited upon hearing that Evan Rachel Wood would be playing Queen Sophie-Ann this season on True Blood, but last night I thought she was horrible. Then I realized that Evan Rachel Wood just really isn’t that great an actress. Even playing
someone as over-the-top as Sophie-Ann she just falls short. Acting skills aside I do like the character of Sophie-Ann.
Of course when Bill asks for the Queen’s help in dealing with the Maenad she stalls and wants to keep Bill around for a while, convincing him that he should spend the night. The Queen seems almost lonely in her huge house complete with it’s “Day Room.” She also has a proclivity for gay sex. Both for herself and for others. She mentions it enough that seems like it’s worth noting.
Back in Bon Temps; Sookie, Lafayette, and Tara’s mom are still holing Tara despite her requests to leave to go find Eggs. She says horrible things to each of them, and eventually convinces her mother to help her escape. After subduing her, Sookie and Lafayette go on the chase for Tara with the agreement about what they are going to do, “I am gonna kick that bitch’s evil ass out of my gran’s house, and then you are gonna shoot her.”
Over at Merlotte’s; Sam, Jason, and Andy are trying to come up with a plan. Andy and Jason decide that they need to arm themselves and head for the sheriff’s office where there is an armory. Sam stays behind and finds Arleene’s kids in the woods behind the bar. They haven’t eaten in 2 days and are obviously a little freaked out since their mom has gone a little crazy. They ask Sam if he knows any vampires who can help and the three of them end up in Fangtasia enlisting the help of Eric. Eric says he doesn’t know what to do, but knows someone who might, and he flies off to see the Queen. Fans of the book, knows that Eric flies all the time. It’s nice they put it in the show as well.
When they reach MaryAnn’s house, or Sookie’s house, depending on how you are looking at it Sookie and Lafayette split up. Sookie heads inside where she encounters the crazies that have fallen under MaryAnn’s spell. Outside, Lafayette isn’t quite so lucky. He runs into MaryAnn and after unsuccessfully trying to shoot her he goes all crazy eyed and falls under his spell. Inside, Sookie find Tara and Eggs destroying her grandmother’s things and building a nest for a giant egg that is sitting in the middle of the bed. It’s then that Lafayette shows up and grabs Sookie.
The Queen finally tells Bill all about maenads and what has to be done to make her go away. He realizes that she isn’t going to be satisfied until she has sacrificed Sam to her “Dark God.” There is a very interesting conversation here between Bill and a girl that is Sookie’s cousin. Have we seen her before? Are we supposed to know who she is or recognize her, because I sure don’t. She asks about Gran and tells Bill she can’t go back because she owes them so much money. Bill tells her that maybe it’s best if she stays away. I guess it isn’t really all that strange that Sophie-Ann knows about Sookie, but are we to assume that she nad Eric have been discussing Sookie? I thought both of those things were a strange leap, but maybe I’m missed something somewhere.
All in all another great episode. I guess we will just have to wait 2 weeks to see how it all ends. One of the best things about these last few episodes is that they are completly original. None of this happend in the books. In the books, MaryAnn just decides to move on, and doesn’t cause any opf this trouble. I like that Alan Ball wasn’t afraid to go his own direction with this. Oh yeah, is it strange that the Queen is named Sophie-Ann and the maenad is named MaryAnn? I mean that’s pretty close.

The Queen is such a great character, and with HBO’s usual success with fantastic actors, I was supremely disappointed in this one. She looked the part, the lines were there, but what poor delivery. The powerful Queen from the books came off as a spoiled little bitch. Boo.

The queen from the books was a spoiled 15 year old brunette French girl with a male counterpart, Andre. I was sadly missing so many of the characters in Sophie-Anne’s world. Siegbert, Wybert, and esp. Mr. Cataliades and Diantha.
In the book…Bill is sent by Sophie-Anne to seduce Sookie to make her part of Sophie-Anne’s entourage, becuase she knows of her talents, possibly through her lover turned Vampire. Her lover in the books is Sookie and Jason’s mysterious and wild cousin Hadley but by the time we meet Sophie-Anne, poor Hadley has been murdered. Leaving behind a secret family.
I wonder since Hadley lives and our smart boy Eric is about to find out about her existance if he will hold this over Bill or just tell Sookie. I doubt very much that Bill’s threat about telling about the V holds much merrit. I have a feeling Sophie Anne knows. It’s a terrible grave risk Eric is making if not.
I found it very telling in the HBO episode that when descibing Mary-Ann, Sophie-Anne told Bill that all creatures have wished themselves into existance. Bill’s reaction that he may have brought about his own fate was lovely. Such self loathing.
