Big Bang Theory

big-bang-theory-castWhile this wasn’t the worst episode of The Big Bang Theory, I can’t say it was one of my favorites either.  There seems to be a trend on this show of separating the storylines more than ever before.  Last night’s episode ran two very distinct storylines one with Leonard and Penny and one with Raj and Howard leaving Sheldon almost completely out of the mix, only used for the occasional humorous moment. I think this is a product of the new Leonard/Penny relationship.

The Leonard/Penny storyline last night made sense.  Of course there are going to be issues with the two of them blending their world.  There is always that issue in relationships.  Obviously it will be more so when you have a couple that has as little in common as Leonard and Penny do.  Leonard wants to kite fight and Penny wants to watch college football.  Leonard obviously knows nothing about football, playing into that nerd stereotype, and he wants to learn.  Sheldon, playing into that Texas stereotype (which is pretty much true, I know I’m from Texas) knows all about football despite having no interest in it.  He agrees to teach Leonard about the game, and in true bigbang_leonardjerseystereotypical nerd fashion he learns nothing about enjoyment of the game, but the technical details.  In the end, he ends up making everyone watching the Nebraska game uncomfortable and Penny, while it appears that the appreciates the effort Leonard put in, let’s him go play with the kites.

The Raj/Walowitz storyline dealt more with their friendship, or the lack of loyalty that Howard has toward Raj.  The problem is that Howard dumps Raj at the drop of a hat anytime he sees a girl.  This ends up costing Raj his prized flying kite, and that’s the straw that broke the camels back.  Howard realizes that he messed up and offers in a very non-friend relationship sort of way to take Raj to do whatever he wants to make it up to him.  They go to the La Brea tar pits, of course Howard sees a cute girl, and realizing that he can’t change Howard let’s him chase after her.  “What a douche”

Thoughts and Observations:

  • Raj’s impressions of a football game, “Really? The only thing I’ve learned in the last two hours is that American men love drinking beer, pee too often and have trouble getting erections.”
  • Howard’s surprise that Sheldon knows about football, “I mean, Quidditch, sure. But football?”
  • Another true stereotype from Sheldon about Texas, “If you’re interested, I also know all about frying meat that isn’t chicken as if it were chicken.”  I did eat Chicken Fried Bacon at the State Fair of Texas this year.
  • “Cats, however, refuse to wear sporting apparel. My sister found that out the hard way.”
  • I’ve seen the Cylon Toaster for sale.  I’m glad to know it actually works.
  • I’d forgotten that Howard rides a Vespa.  It’s so fitting.
