While I remember bits of the original mini-series V, and the subsequent series that followed, I don’t remember all that much. Of course the image of the scaly headed Visitors is etched in my brain, but other than that I didn’t have many preconceived notions of what to expect from last night’s premiere episode of V. I do know enough about the 1984 series that it made grand illusions to the Nazi’s and the plight of the Jews in Europe. Not very timely,
but the message was still received loud and clear. Of course this time around we are presented to the V’s in a whole new light, the war on terror. Much more topical this time around.
The premise of the show is simple. The V arrive al over major cities all at once. Their beautiful leader Anna appears on huge screens on the ships and tells the people of the world that they are there in peace. They only need to stay long enough to replenish themselves. In exchange they will share their technology with the people of earth. Seems all good right? While many people seem to think so, others aren’t so sure.
So far we have four storylines:
- Erica Evans is a FBI agent tracking terrorist cells in NYC with her partner Dale. Her son is becoming obsessed with the V, and even wants to join their Peace Ambassadors program. While Erica and Dale are tracking a sleeper cell they come upon a meeting. It turns out that it is a meeting of resistance fighters who are opposed to the V.
- Father Jack Landry isn’t sold on the official line from the Vatican on the V. He urges people to be cautions. When one of his parishioners gives him an envelope with an address on it, he ends up at the same meeting as Erica.
- Chad Decker is a newscaster who’s looking to prove he’s more than just a pretty face that can read the news. Anna chooses him to be the first to interview her. He is forced to compromise his integrity when he is told to not ask her the hard questions.
- Ryan Nichols is planning to propose to his girlfriend Valerie, but he keeps getting strange phone calls and invitations from the man who ends up leading the resistance meeting. Turns out, Ryan is a V in disguise.
At the meeting the people there get some frightening news. Turns out the V have been living among them for sometime disguised as humans. They have been watching and planning this whole thing since they got here, and they are not as friendly as they pretend to be. Erica gets the biggest shock of all when her partner Dale attacks her and she discovers that he is actually a V.
Thoughts and Observations:
- I thought the days of the mini-series were over? Obviously not. ABC will be airing 4 episode right now and wait to air the other 9 some time around March of next year. That seems like a long time to wait.
- I’m going to miss Elizabeth Mitchell on Lost. I mean I’ve got no proof that she’s really dead over on the show, but when you start starring in another show that’s a pretty good sign you might be done with the first one.
- How long before we see a V in it’s true form? My guess is the end of the 4th episode. Give us just enough to make us turn in next March.
