Season 3 of Damages began Monday, January 25, on FX  and it promises to be another thrilling season. If just watching the intro, which included scenes from all three seasons, didn’t grab you than I don’t know what will.

Glenn Close as Patty HewesThe story line jumps from present, to six month past, to six months in the future, and back again. You would think that knowing what has happened and what is going to happen would help the viewer figure out the plot, but that is not the case with this series.

Season 3 begins with Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) as the court-appointed trustee working on the Tobin Ponzi Scheme case.  Patty and Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan) are responsible for tracking down the funds swindled from the investors. After eleven years with Patty, Tom is made a partner.

Hewes and Associates is working in conjunction with the District Attorney’s office. Coincidentally, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) is now working for the District Attorney’s office in the drug prosecution area.
.
Patty believes that Louis Tobin (Len Cariou) has money hidden and that his family knows about the funds. Louis Tobin confessed to his family at Thanksgiving (six months earlier) that his investment business was a Ponzi Scheme. His son, Joe (Scott Campbell) who is known for wanting to do the right thing called the District Attorney’s office and reported his father’s fraud. The family’s assets were frozen.

The Tobin family attorney, Leonard Winstone (Martin Short)  who is called Uncle Lenny by family members is there to support Louis Tobin’s wife and children. He is introduced in the episode, and promises to be an interesting character.

Marilyn Tobin, (Lily Tomlin) is deposed by Patty Hewes. She claims to know nothing about her husband’s business. Mrs.Tobin says to Patty, “Men have their secrets, “ to which Patty replies, “Men have their secrets, but so do women, and women are better at keeping them.”

And the secrets continue.  In this series, “don’t trust anyone.”

Questions raised by scenes from the past, present, and future:

Who is the architect, Julian Decker (Keith Carradine) that is pursuing Patty?
Does it mean anything that the Tobins call Leonard Winstone, Uncle Lenny?
Did you notice the Statue of Liberty bookend (like the one that was in Ellen and David’s apartment) in the car that crashed into Patty’s car?
Is Ellen being honest when she tells her boss, Curtis Gates, (Ben Shenkman) that she has had no contact with Patty?
Who really hired the guys with bats that destroyed Donny Ryan’s Harley?
Why was Patty staring at the picture of David and Ellen?
Why would Patty buy a $3000.00 purse for Ellen?
Where did Louis Tobin hide the money?
Why does the homeless man (Michael Laurence) have the phone with the mysterious phone number?
How did Tom’s empty car crash into Patty’s car?
How did Tom end up dead in the dumpster?
“What are you not telling us?”, Detective Huntley (Tom Noonan) asks Patty at the end of this episode.

Oh, Detective, I have been wondering this for the past two seasons, and I love to watch the answers unfold.

Reading your review made more sense than watching the show. I have been watching Damages since the very first episode and must admit I am an addict. However, the twists and turns make me crazy. And one more question, why did the homeless man have the $3,000 chanel bag with blood on it????? Becky

Good question, I thought about that today. (which is another reason I like the show, you keep trying to figure it out). Is his connection to Ellen, Patty, Tom, one of the Tobins, or some character we don't suspect yet?

Thanks for writing about this. There’s a lot of good tech information on the internet. You’ve got a lot of that info here on your site. I’m impressed – I try to keep a couple blogs somewhat ongoing, but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a big job with this one. How do you do it?
