Victory Against Tough Odds

Award Shows

Two of my favorite new shows were honored during the Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday. The first of these occurred when the cast of Glee! received the award for Best Comedy Ensemble. Their competition in that category included the casts of such well-established favorites as 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Office. In fact their win against 30 Rock prevented that show from making a clean sweep in the TV comedy series arena since Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin won the individual top honors. Even though Glee! still feels like an underdog, the cast has managed to received kudos during each of the major awards ceremonies of the season thus far.

Juliana Margulies received the trophy for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her work in the great new series The Good Wife. It certainly wasn’t her first time at the podium. She received six of these awards during her tenure on ER. However, I was glad to see her recognized for her new series. This show is so good and as she said herself during her acceptance speech, it just gets better and better each week because of the terrific writers creating the scripts.

A highlight of the program for me was the presentation of a well-deserved lifetime achievement award given to 88-year-old Betty White for her more than 65 year career (and counting) of being America’s favorite television airhead. Upon accepting her award from presenter Sandra Bullock, she quipped “Isn’t it heartening to see how far a girl as plain as she is can go.” She also impishly alluded to the fact that she might have “had” some of the men in the audience, but promised not to tell.  Later in the evening presenter George Clooney jokingly thanked her for her discretion before adding that he had heard from a “friend” that she was a real bobcat in the sack.

More serious moments included Kevin Bacon’s emotional acceptance speech for his work in the televised movie “Taking Chance” as he thanked his wife for allowing him to “go away” or withdraw into his role knowing that he would always return.

Drew Barrymore was extemporaneous and sincere as she spoke of her pride in carrying on the great theatrical name of her Barrymore forebears as she thanked her Grey Gardens director for challenging her with the dramatic role that earned her Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie.
