Project Runway Ep.5 – “Run for Cover”

Project Runway

“Life isn’t fair, so why the hell should Project Runway be?” (Ala Anthony)

Okay, here we go. Heidi tells us this week is about being “picture perfect”.  The designers gather and go to the Marie Claire building, where editor-in-chief Joanna Coles joins them.  The challenge is to (in one day, with $150) design an outfit for a celebrity to wear on the April cover of Marie Claire.

But who’s the celeb? PR’s own Heidi Klum. This should be interesting.

The designers are reminded that this issue will air in April.  Let me say that I am SO excited for the trends this spring and am curious to see if the designers are on point, considering I’m not sure when this episode filmed. I’m hoping for flesh colors (even if this will be a magazine cover), military looks, and some good prints.  What am I seeing so far? Lots of solid blues. Pretty, but is it trendy enough for a magazine cover?

Some points of note in the workroom: Seth Aaron is annoying. (I still associate him with a serial killer, so I agree with them on this one).  Ben calls his dress “butterfly on acid”. Uhhh, what?  Jay Nicolas has some nude colored dress that I am looking forward to. Anna has never made anything besides a dress and is working on some shorts.  They don’t fit her model. Hysteria ensues.

It is only fitting that Joanna Coles is guest judging. Half the judges are from Marie Claire and one will wear the winning garment. I can almost feel the pressure FOR the designers.

Amy: Very springy. I love the flower appendage and the print. Figures she already has immunity.

Seth Aaron: Military pantsuit. Not for a cover, but on trend. And SO well-made.

Jesse: Cute, textured, simple.

Anna: SO boring. The vest and top don’t go together.

Anthony: LOVING the asymmetry (on the shoulder!).

Janeane: HATING the asymmetry (on the weird hem). And the dress has these wings. Dislike.

Mila: As much as I don’t want to like her clothes, I do.  The color choice is off however.

Emilio: Reminds me of his first dress (that won), but I don’t love this one quite as much.

Jay Nicolas: ILOVETHISDRESS. The flesh colors. The drama. Awesome. But maybe more for a red carpet?

Jonathan: Yes, rompers are on trend, but this is kind of superhero-ish.

Maya: Forgettable. Definite downgrade from last week.

Ben: I love the blue. And the belt. And the back. This guy is underrated.

For the most part, the designs were impressive. There’s only two people who I think absolutely need to be sent home at this point, and that is Anna and Janeane.

My faves? Amy, Anthony, Jay Nicolas

Least faves? Anna, Janeane, Maya

But what did the judges think?

Top 3: Ben, Anthony, Emilio (aka Let’s Hear it for the Boys?)

I’m glad Anthony won; I bet he thinks PR is fair now!

Bottom 3: Anna, Janeane, Mila

No hard feelings for Anna. Her inexperience got to her and it was just her time to go.

Tomorrow morning is the PR finale runway show at NY Fashion Week.  Apparently all the remaining designers are showing as an attempt at a guise?  If I weren’t working, I’d totally go check that out.

Um, lastly, next week they are designing for children? Oh, I’m sorry, is this “Toddlers in Tiaras”? Definitely some ambivalence on this one.  See ya then…
