Last night the sometimes painful journey that is America’s Got Talent started anew. Is this the 3rd or 4th season? I’m thinking it must be the 4th. Last year the big guy who sang opera won, Terry Fator the ventriloquist won the year before, and the little red-haired girl who sang country won the first year. So yes, this must be year 4. You can also count the years by the other changes. Brandy was the host the first year, then she killed someone with her car. Sharron Osbourne took her place the second year, and joined new host Jerry Springer who took over for Regis Philbin. Last season there were no changes, but this season Jerry has been replaced by Nick Cannon.

I don’t know much about Nick Cannon other than he had a show on MTV, he’s married to Mariah Carrey (so you have to assume she will show up at some point, right?), and I know that Dave Chapelle’s kids think he is hilarious.

Now that all that is out of the way, we can talk about the painful auditions. I honestly think that the audition process is much more painful here than the very painful audition process of American Idol. Sure on AI you get the idiots who just want to be on TV, or worse those that think they are great singers and in truth can’t carry a tune at all, but on AGT you get the sad, the poor, and the freaky acts. Occasionally you get someone with some talent.

Last night was just the first night and you got the guy who could turn his feet backwards and walk, you got the guy that took a power drill and stuck it up his nose while it was going, and of course the guy that sang his song about David Hassllehoff.

There were some talented folks as well. Everyone is freaking out about Voices of Glory. Of course it’s a good story, of course they were decent singers, but if you sing a song about America you are going to get a standing ovation and win over the crowd and judges. Anyone remember Kristy Lee Cook from American Idol Season 7? The week Kristy should have gone home she pulled out God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood, and it saved her. Of course she went home the following week, but that’s not the point. The point is that if you sing about America, or wheel out your momma in a wheelchair you aren’t going home, end of story.

Am I the only one out there that thinks it’s strange that America’s Got Talent has two British judges? Were there no American C-List celebrities out there willing to judge this show? I mean come on on folks.
